About Whirlwind Engineering, Inc.
Founded in 1994, Whirlwind Engineering Inc. has established itself as a leader in the design, development and manufacturing of innovative process solutions and equipment. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan our state of the art technical center and manufacturing facilities produce bag dump stations, sifters, declumpers, singulators, grinders, modular conveyors, and blenders. We serve diverse industries including food, consumer products, pharmaceutical, chemical, automotive and aerospace with our multi-functional and custom solutions.
Our Rich Heritage
While Whirlwind Engineering was founded in 1994, our story begins much earlier with our sister company, Mulco Engineering, in the United Kingdom. Mulco’s legacy of innovation stretches back to 1912 when it was established as Mulco Specialties in Aberdeen, Scotland by Adolf Muller.
In 1948, Ernie Muller of Mulco developed the first generation elevator sifter which became the forerunner of the revolutionary ES4 process system. This technology initially modernized bakeries in the U.K. and Europe and ultimately transformed processing and material handling in various industries.
30 YEARS STRONG
1994-2024
The Birth of Whirlwind Engineering
Our founder, Steve Cencich, recognized the immense potential of the Mulco system when he met Mike Muller, grandson of Adolf Muller of Mulco and a key figure in its development. Impressed by the machine’s capabilities and envisioning its applications for custom machines across various industries, Steve was inspired to establish Whirlwind Engineering in 1994.
This fortuitous meeting and Steve’s visionary approach led to the adaptation and evolution of the ES4 process system for the North American market, setting the foundation for Whirlwind Engineering’s success in multi-functional processing and material handling equipment.

Customer-Driven Innovation
We’ve been using the ES for over 18 months to reprocess material, but the machine paid for itself in 6 weeks. It’s allowed us to combine three operations in one while taking up about one-fourth the floor space.
Willard Saxby
Using the ES4 for the screening and conveying dry batter mixes, we’ve seen considerable labor savings and increased process efficiency. In addition, the machine is very easy to clean and maintain. The ES4 has been everything we expected and more. We’ve already ordered a second machine.
Steve Hinger
We looked at all types of equipment before we found the ES, which did such a thorough job of blending that our people did backflips when they saw the first sample. And when we needed service on a weekend, Whirlwind Engineering was unbelievably responsive.
Ted Reuter
The ES4 cut a back-breaking job of sifting and elevating 900 pounds of toasted flour from a time of one hour to 4-½ minutes. The machine has worked flawlessly. Needless to say, other divisions of our parent company (Nestle, Inc) are taking a closer look at our ES4.
Pat Halligan
Portability was essential to our operations. The ES not only improved product quality and consistency during sifting and blending procedures, but allowed s the mobility to double it’s use.
